Sewing in South East Asia

Kokua means kindness, but Hawaiian words always have deeper meanings.

This word is tied to community and family. It is giving without thought of a return.

Our young people from all over the world come to Kona to work in the cafeteria, landscaping, housekeeping, and as elementary teacher aides, all without pay. In fact they pay close to one thousand dollars just to receive their room and board.

Without them the schools at University of the Nations could not equip their students to go to the nations.
I am honored to be be apart of the staff that helps and mentors these young people to adulthood.

This little precious couple is now in Switzerland at our Leadership school.

After this training they are planning to go to Canada and start a new DTS school there.

They did their DTS in Canada.

Paraguay

This is a story about a one-on-one from Paraguay.

We had gone to get ice cream for our one-on-one. She shared how she learned of YWAM Kona.

She had learned English, so when a group of Fire and Fragrance came to her region to do ministry, she was asked to translate for them.
She went with them to the villages to give out Bibles and saw the incredible joy displayed when the villagers who wanted a Bible received it, written in their mother tongue.

This totally changed her, and she started working toward coming to YWAM. She worked a quarter for Kokua, which was when we had time together, then went to Fire and Fragrance.

Aafter her out reach she staffed a quarter then went to take the leadership classes so she could serve in other ways and in other places.

Germany

I was shocked to learn that in so many places in Germany, there is only one church available in the villages.

Most of them are resting on the past and do not understand that God is moving today and bringing that revelation to the church members.   One of my very special memories of one of the young ladies who was my one-on-one was when she asked to be rebaptized.

At her baptism, the pastor asked did she want to die to lukewarm Christianity.

In a recent news report, there is a 2% increase in people saying they read the Bible every day. The increase is coming from the 18 to 30-year-old group. This is the group that YWAM is targeting of which I have had a very small part in.

Norway

One of the young ladies in my building messaged me about how having my door open and allowing the young ladies just to come into my room helped me know that she was seen.

They come mainly to visit, and we laugh and cry together. I pray for them. It helps them know that the staff in Kokua care for them and that there is a place for them; when there are misunderstandings, and they did not intend to hurt anyone, they can come, and we can talk about how to say things a little differently, so it is less condemning or confrontational.

I encourage them to listen to how other people say things to increase the way they express themselves, and I try to always pray for them.

China

This was one of the hardest for me.
This young lady was in the one-child-mandated time in China’s history.
Her Father wanted a son, so he had multiple affairs seeking a son.  She felt unwanted and unloved.  We tried counseling, I saw God work in her, and I really do believe she had a revelation of her worth, but she always reverted back to her pain.
I learned in my Crossroads journey and teaching I can only help you when you want the help more than I do for you. This was a painful lesson in the truth I was taught.

Columbia

A Columbian in Kona.
After serving the Lord with Kokua for three months, I realized I needed to know Him more.
From Kokua, I went to the Performing Arts Disciple Training School[DTS], where I had the chance to go to South Korea and England to preach the gospel and learn many things that awakened a desire and hunger to be a full-time missionary.
With that in mind, I understood that I needed to have a better understanding of the Word of God. So, I applied to a School of Biblical Studies, and this is where I am right now. It is a nine-month program where you study the entire Bible, which is building a firm foundation for my life.
The school ends in June, and I will go to Mexico for three months for my second missionary trip.

Sustainability Technology Research Center

I work on the small space gardens, to be able to help people who do not have land and/or space to have a regular garden.

At this time I have been invited to help teach and show people in Asia possibilities of this type of gardening.

About Diann

I am the mother of four grown children, eight young adult grand children, and three great grand children.  I was born and reared in Texas, but as an adult moved to the Northwest, eventually settling in the Flathead valley of Montana.  As I go to different people groups I teach skills to women so they can better care for their families.

100% Organic: Surinam Cherry

One of my challenges this year has been to learn about tropical plants.

I made this jam using Surinam Cherry, from limited ingredients, to show the different flavors available in the  communities we work with in Asia.
